11.14.04 Last night I hit my first hard rock concert in Georgia seeing Metallica and GodSmack at a sold out Gwinnett Civic Center just 15 minutes from my house. It was part of my 45th birthday celebration. What better way to celebrate aging than a Metallica concert! Georgia concerts are NOT California concerts! I'm definitely in the South now. It was all good though. People were more friendly in terms of just really getting into it and celebrating with others near them. The venue size was just about right--not too big but big enough for the "big concert" feel. What was really different was that the floor scene was so reserved (i.e. "respectful" in the South I guess). There was like one "mini" mosh and that was it! My God man...in California the place goes wild during Metallica concerts and the mosh pit is a friggin' MOSH! GodSmack opened. I hadn't seen this band before but have some of their music. They kicked total ass. An excellent opening band that did as much to get the crowd going as Metallica. Excellent band--I highly recommend you check them out. Great energy and intensity. They did a dueling tribal drum thing that was very unique. Metallica. There is no substitute--what can you say? This was my third time seeing Metallica. Most of their set was the new St. Anger album. The played a little of the Black album and Garage, Inc. and also played one off Master of Puppets. They ended the final encore with my all time favorite Metallica song Seek and Destroy--gotta love it! Candas went along and we danced our asses off with the other Southerners. We had a lot of fun. I had as much energy to give back there as anyone. James was really into the "energy" thing as he encouraged everyone to enjoy life with Metallica and to give them our best so the band could give back to us...it was cool. It was nice to hear some kick ass jams again. Mega flash pots! Lots of flames, fireworks, and all in the round with a revolving stage so everyone in the house had a great view. Not a bad night in the 'ol town of Hot-lanta. Rockin' in the free
